If your cat starts drinking more water than usual and urinating excessively, it is most often a sign of illness. Kidney disease and diabetes mellitus are common in cats and can cause an increase in thirst and appetite as well. Keep out fresh cool water in various areas in the home and be sure to have your vet perform a urinalysis to diagnosis the problem. Kidney disease and diabetes are not curable but can be controlled for your cat’s better quality of life.

The first thing to do to stop your cat from pooping on the floor is to be sure the litter box is cleaned regularly and often. Cats are very fussy about this. Always put the litter box in the same place once cleaned and disinfected. If you find “accidents” on the floor, place them in the litter box to send the message, “this is where it goes.”

You can try using spray repellents around the home where the cat frequents. Most sprays are labeled for dogs but work for cats as well. You may also need to restrict your cat to certain areas of the home where you can monitor the situation more closely until the cat stops having accidents. Thoroughly clean any accident spots with an enzyme cleaner so there are no repeat offenses. If there is still a problem and you can’t get it under control, you may need vet assistance.

The canary is classified as part of the finch family. Their name derives from their notive home known as the Canary Islands. The most common color of the domestic canary is yellow although it can be found in other bright pastel colors. The Fourth of July can be stressful for pets, especially dogs. In fact, any holiday that involves the setting off of fireworks can cause a great deal of anxiety for your pet, so here are some tips to help keep your pet as calm as possible:

~Make sure that you bring your pet inside. Pets are most comfortable in the home rather than out with the family celebrating. Note the places and the spaces around your home where your pet seems to be the most comfortable, ideally in an interior room or a room that has no access to the outdoors.

~If you must take your dog out with you, make sure you have an exit strategy. You need to be able to relocate your dog to a safe place as quickly as possible.

~Use a little aromatherapy in your dog’s favorite place. A little lavender and vanilla spray can be rather soothing. Drop essential oils into a spray bottle of water for an affordable way to encourage your dog to relax. This is a method that is commonly used around shelters to calm dogs.

~Music therapy is also helpful. You may want to add some rock n’ roll to the mix, as well as classical and soothing tunes. This is something you may need to do before the holiday and after to ensure that your pet’s stress level remains down. This tends to be a good trick to drown out the pops of fireworks outside.

~Surround your pet with items they enjoy. Cats love catnip, dogs love bones, and they all love toys.

~Thundershirts have proven to be effective, but you will need to make sure your pet has practiced wearing it in advance. These shirts bring them peace and comfort.

Glaucoma is an abnormal pressure of the eye in dogs and cats. A normal eye drain of watery fluid and when that process becomes difficult, it causes continual pressure within the eye. The increased pressure can cause harm to the optic nerve, creating vision loss. The primary cause of glaucoma is unknown and occurs without warning, usually later on in life. There are several secondary causes of glaucoma in dogs and cats.

Inflammation of the eye occurs because of debris and excess protein in the eye – very common in cats. These particles in the eye can block the normal drainage process of the eye. The fluid can block the pupil area and stick to the iris and lens of the eye, causing chronic inflammation. Dogs are highly affected as well with inflammation of the eye.

Lens luxation or dislocation can block fluid flow and drainage. This condition is more common in certain breeds of dogs, especially those with bulging eyes. The pug, Lhasa apso, Shih Tzu, certain other terriers, Border collie and Australian blue heeler are all prone to this condition. Premature breakdown of the fibers of the eye that keeps the lens in place can cause the lens to move around and sometimes pops out. Aside from glaucoma, this can also cause tumor growth and cataracts. Tumors and trauma of the eyes are contributing factors to glaucoma in dogs and cats as well, by preventing fluid from draining.

Removing a pet’s dewclaws is not necessary but a matter of choice and circumstances. If the dewclaws are not loose and dangling, they will need regular trimming but not necessarily need removing. If the dewclaws are floppy and loose, they can present a hazard for your pet by catching on something and being torn off, get infected and be very painful. Many cat owners remove front dew claws for the indoor pet and for the safety of the owners, the home and the cat. When it comes to dogs,

if they are growing properly and tightly against the leg without causing any hazards to your pet’s regular life and playtime, they may not need to be removed. You should talk with your veterinarian to discuss the options of removing dewclaws or leaving them alone if they do not get in the way of a dog’s normal daily activities.

Meowing is a way for your cat to communicate to you and needs to be addressed if it is something sudden. Otherwise, it may be due to illness, attention seeking, hunger, loneliness, stress or needing a mate. After insuring it is not a medical issue according to your vet, you can train your cat to be a little quieter.

Don’t give your cat attention when making a ruckus. Even if it is negative attention, the cat knows this is a way for you to notice it. Ignoring the outburst of meowing is the best thing you can do, even if you must wear ear plugs. It will get louder and longer but don’t give in despite all efforts on the part of the cat.

During a quiet moment, take the time to play excessively with your cat, pet and massage it, talk to it in a loving and caring tone of voice. Only give the excessive attention when your cat is quiet and stop if it starts meowing. The cat will learn to differentiate what you expect. It will take time and patience for your cat to be re-trained, so don’t get discouraged – your cat will be more relaxed and self-assured.
