Aegean cat breed
The Aegean cat is a domesticated cat that originates from the Cycladic Islands in Greece. The word Aegean refers to a naturally occurring landrace and also goes by the Greek name γάτα του Αιγαίου. This is the only breed of cat that is native to Greece and is one of the oldest domestic-type cat. The name derives in honor of the surrounding seas. Most of these cats live a feral life although some are kept as pets.

Many of these cats made their way to various countries through trading and fishing vessels. They were welcomed on these ships and vessels to serve as great mousers. Some believe that the Aegean cat is related to such breeds as the Angora. These cats have only been recognized as the special breed that they are for only the past couple of decades, and are considered a national treasure of Greece.

The Aegean cat is a friendly domestic cat with good communication skills, high intelligence and lively personality. They make great pets for families with children and other pets, other than an unprotected indoor or outdoor aquarium. This is due to their island cat heritage to go fishing. They do fit in well in most any type of home environment and family. They do however have that urge for outdoor life and appreciate an enclosed area outside where they can still enjoy nature and its perks while still remaining safe. This cat loves dogs and bonds well with them. They love their humans and make fun playmates

This breed of cat can be predisposed to common feline genetic health issues and should come with a health guarantee at time of purchase/adoption. Anyone that is reputable will be open and honest about the animal's health, providing that guarantee for good health. This cat is generally a healthy breed because of the selective breeding that produces this species. They are less likely to carry genetic diseases compared to other feline breeds. A major concern to be aware of is obesity and it is important that you provide a nutritious diet to keep the cat at its appropriate weight.

The Aegean cat has semi-long hair. The breed goes through an excessive shedding process in spring as the coat prepares for summer. Some of these cats, kept indoors, can shed continually throughout the year. Their short coats can come in tri or bi-colors, typically white with either signs of black, red, yellow, cream and blue, some with tabby striping. Their build is sleek, thin and muscular. They have medium-sized paws that are round in shape. Their ears are covered in hair, wide at the base and come to a rounded tip. They have almond-shaped eyes, varying in different shades of green. The Aegean cat is medium in size, growing between 9 and 10 pounds at maturity. They typically live about 12 years.

The Aegean is easy to maintain. Brush the cat with a slicker brush weekly to remove any dead hair, clean the ears every couple of weeks, trim the nails monthly and brush the teeth daily or at least weekly. Maintain regular veterinary visits and your Aegean will live a long, healthy, happy life.
